What is Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS):

ü Leaky Gut Syndrome is a digestive malfunction that occurs in the intestines.

ü The mucosa (intestinal wall) should prevent macromolecules (large undesirable molecules), toxins and undigested food particles from entering the blood steam and the inside of the body.

ü For various reasons the integrity of the intestinal wall is compromised and the Lumina (spaces between the cell wall) becomes enlarged and results in various substances in the digestive tracts leaking into the body and blood stream.

ü When a foreign matter enters the body, be it a food particle, toxin, bacteria, yeast, parasite, etc, the immune system usually responds to protect the internal environment causing various symptoms.

ü Intestinal wall becomes inflamed resulting in numerous digestive and other disorders

ü It is believed that over time this condition may contribute to a number of health problems as shown below.

ü Leaky Gut Syndrome is not usually tested for or diagnosed by your Doctor; despite the fact significant amount of published research has implicated increased permeability of the intestinal wall in a large number of illnesses and allergy.

Definition:

A UK based Autism charity gives the following definition for leaky gut syndrome for Allergy Induced Autism (http://www.autismmedical.com/), it states that Leaky Gut Syndrome is "an increase in permeability of the intestinal mucosa to luminal macromolecules, antigens and toxins associated with inflammatory degenerative and/or atrophic mucosal damage".

About the test:

ü The gut permeability test is very straight forward to carry out.

ü The test directly measures the ability of two non-metabolised sugar molecules, lactulose and mannitol, to permeate the intestinal mucosa (wall).

ü Lactulose is only slightly absorbed by a healthy intestinal wall, however if the gut's immune system or barrier integrity is compromised more will be absorbed through the gut wall.

ü Lactulose thus serves as a marker of mucosal integrity.

ü Mannitol is easily absorbed therefore serving as a marker of transcellular uptake.

ü To perform the test a drink of pre-measured amount of lactulose and mannitol is consumed.

ü The degree of permeability is reflected in the level of the two sugars recovered in a urine sample collected over the next 6 hours.
