ABOUT ALLERGY & FOOD INTOLERANCE What is an Allergy? ·
True classic allergies can be life threatening in some
individuals and can cause anaphylaxis. ·
Typical allergy symptoms tend to be immediate and can take the
form of swelling of lips or throat, skin rash or hives, vomiting or breathing
problems. ·
The symptoms may be caused by an IgE immune mechanism or an
inflammatory response which is different to the IgG antibodies discussed
below. ·
If you suspect you have an allergy then your must consult your
Doctor immediately. ·
Details
of a standard IgE antibody test
·
It is a delayed immune reaction to food allergens that may
cause unpleasant symptoms ·
The symptoms are caused by an non IgE (typically IgG) immune
mechanism which is different to an classical allergy response involving an
IgE reaction ·
Ongoing research continues in these immune mechanisms ·
It is associated with a wide range of recurrent, chronic
conditions, and can involve many organ systems ·
Some of the symptoms and conditions are listed above ·
Food intolerance is unlikely to be life threatening ·
Frequently common foods are usually implicated ·
The reaction, symptom may be observed hours or several days
after the offending food has been ingested ·
Details
of a standard IgG food intolerance test
Is it common? ·
2% of the population suffer from food true classic allergies ·
Whilst an estimated 10 to 20% of the population suffer from
food intolerance ·
It can affect anyone at any age ·
Symptoms often occur some time after the food has been eaten ·
It can be difficult to find the problem food without the use
of advanced laboratory testing ·
For example, the milk or bread eaten on one day could be the
cause of joint pain three days later ·
Some food intolerances are caused by an enzyme deficiency or
chemical sensitivity ·
Others are an immune response caused by food specific IgG
antibodies What may cause the problem? The
majority of food intolerances are a result of an immune response; this may
have occurred because of other factors such as: Ø Poor
digestion Ø Dysbiosis Ø Candidiasis (yeast
Infection) Ø Parasites Ø Intestinal
infections Ø Poorly
balanced diet Ø Intake
of processed foods Ø Intake
of refined carbohydrates and sugar Ø Increased
intake of chemicals and toxins Ø Alcohol
consumption Ø Effects
of drugs and medications Ø Increased gut
permeability (leaky gut syndrome) Ø Impaired
adrenal function Each
individual has their own unique reaction to food. Antibodies against the food
may appear in the blood. Production of Antibodies is one of the ways in which
the body's immune system reacts to substances that adversely affect it.
Antibodies are also known as "Immunoglobulin"
or IgG, IgA, IgE, etc for short. Over time, the antibodies may form immune complexes,
which can become deposited in joints and other organs and may be responsible
for many of the symptoms that are seen in food intolerance. More and more of us are having problems
with ordinary food ·
Allergy and food intolerance are increasingly common today ·
Medical authorities believe that 2 in 10 people suffer from
food intolerances ·
Food intolerances can now easily be identified in individuals
showing symptoms ·
Using the latest laboratory technology only a pin-drop blood
sample is required in most cases ·
